DEO popped in to see the latest exhibit at LucSculpture, called “In the Moment,” and spoke with artist Lauren McKinley Renzetti about it. The show’s theme arises from the fact, she says, that many abstract paintings happen on an emotional and reactionary level.

“We start off with possibly a mood, colour theme, technique or a sketch but ultimately, like most good painting, we are reflecting on what the paint is doing, and how water, knife and brush react to the surface we work on at that precise moment,” says Lauren. “Many of us work with music to help inspire and the brush does the work of interpreting that reaction. We listen to what the paint and surface are telling us and to some degree we try and be one with it, not forcing our will onto it. Being present is very important with art making, especially with the ephemeral abstract work,” she adds.

LucSculpture offers classes for adults and children in painting and drawing, pottery and clay works, music, and health and wellness. Sign your kids up for spring or summer camps. Join a yoga or tai chi class. Take a course in cartooning or animation. Learn Japanese brush painting or attend a Saturday morning family clay class. Enrol in Drawing for the Terrified Beginner.

Also you can rent the main floor, complete with kitchen and washroom, for a gathering.

In the Moment closes tomorrow, Sunday, April 19. So hurry over to LucSculpture at 663 Greenwood Ave., just north of Danforth. 416.461.7936.
